Menopausal Hormones Unveiled: Oestrogen, Progesterone and Testosterone

We're going to take a deeper dive into the sometimes turbulent world of your female menopausal hormones. Here we'll explore the three main hormones crucial to your menopausal transition: oestrogen (or estrogen, I'm from the UK so we have the 'O' in front), progesterone, and testosterone. These hormonal powerhouses play a significant role in how you feel physically and emotionally during this transformative phase of life. Their role has now begun to change as you are no longer expected to reproduce. Your brain and body now have the difficult task of adapting to the new hormone levels and this can cause some turbulent symptoms during this stage of your life.

Menopausal Changes:

Once you hit perimenopause those oestrogen levels start to decline, and this can lead to some of the classic menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and mood swings. It's like your body's oestrogen supply is going on a rollercoaster ride all of its own.

Impact:

The effects of declining oestrogen continue into the postmenopausal phase, that's the phase after perimenopause. You become more vulnerable to conditions like osteoporosis and heart disease. This continues until you are ready to leave us and is a common misconception of the menopausal journey. It's essential to address these oestrogen changes, and one option to consider is hormone replacement therapy (HRT). for this to be anywhere near effect you must always consult with a healthcare professional before making any decisions.

Role of Progesterone:

Progesterone, often known as the "pregnancy hormone," plays a crucial role in preparing your uterus for pregnancy. It's your body's way of preparing to welcome a new life.

Menopausal Changes:

As you journey through perimenopause, progesterone levels start to decrease. This hormonal shift is often associated with irregular periods and changes in their intensity and duration. Sleep disturbances may also make an appearance due to the decline in progesterone production.

Impact:

Not only does progesterone prepare your body for pregnancy, but it also supports your sleep. Quality sleep is vital for your overall well-being and the health of a potential growing embryo. When progesterone levels fluctuate, it can disrupt your sleep patterns and even affect your mood. Mood swings, anxiety, and a rollercoaster of emotions can often become become the new norm.
