We've all been led to believe that our 401k (or retirement plan for those outside the US) is the golden ticket to a comfortable retirement. But is it really sufficient? Will it truly provide everything you need to see you through your golden years? Let's dive into this crucial topic and explore some eye-opening realities about retirement planning, especially for women in midlife.
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Tracey Montgomery. I'm an older single mom to a high-maintenance young individual with a myriad of medical issues, including hormonal ones. My daughter is at the beginning of her hormonal journey, while I'm at the other end. My perimenopause was a particularly challenging time, with severe symptoms with extreme symptoms that concerned my doctor, leaving me with chronic fatigue amongst my lingering symptoms.
This experience has made me acutely aware of how our life stages, particularly for women, can profoundly affect our retirement plans.
Women often face unique challenges in both the workplace and retirement. Many find themselves adversely affected in the workplace and, consequently, in their ability to save for retirement. There are numerous reasons why women might have fewer years to contribute to their retirement plans:
1. Career breaks for childcare or eldercare
2. Part-time work to balance family responsibilities
3. Lower-paying jobs or industries
4. The impact of menopause on career progression
5. The increase in women over 50 finding themselves alone
Did you know that 40% of women change their career path due to menopause? That's a staggering figure, considering that 51% of the population is female. It's a reality that many of us don't want to admit, but it's crucial to acknowledge when planning for our financial future. This shift can have a profound impact on your retirement savings, reducing the number of years you're able to contribute to your 401k or pension.
We all dream of a retirement where we can relax, unwind, and finally enjoy the fruits of our labour. But just as we're ready to kick back, menopause and midlife might bring unexpected challenges. Along with menopause comes a host of unexpected responsibilities:
1. Adult children returning home with grandchildren
2. Caring for ageing parents or relatives
3. Increased likelihood of living alone (there's a significant rise in women over 50 living solo)
These factors can dramatically alter your financial situation, making it different from what you envisioned 10 or 15 years ago.
So, what are your options? Should you continue slogging away at the same job, doing everything for everyone else, or should you start exploring ways to diversify your income streams? Now might be the perfect time to think about how you can generate additional income without adding to your workload. Given these midlife challenges, it's time to take a hard look at your retirement savings. Ask yourself:
1. Have you closely examined your finances in the past 1-5 years?
2. Do your projected retirement savings match the lifestyle you desire and deserve?
3. Are you prepared for unexpected expenses or life changes?
If you're feeling a bit foggy about your financial future (thanks, menopause brain!), don't worry. It's never too late to reassess and make changes.
Instead of solely relying on your 401k, consider diversifying your income streams. Here are some ideas to explore:
1. Renting out property
2. Starting an online business
3. Creating courses or offering consultations based on your expertise
4. Exploring passive income investments
Remember, you don't need to take on another full-time job. The goal is to find ways to supplement your income without sacrificing your precious time.
As we navigate midlife, it's crucial to embrace our financial power. When was the last time you took a close look at your retirement finances? Have you evaluated whether they align with the lifestyle you desire and deserve? It’s easy to get foggy about our financial future, especially when dealing with the cognitive effects of menopause. That's why it's crucial to talk to others in similar situations, people who are exploring the same avenues and activities that could make your retirement far more fulfilling. We've invented and adapted to so much change throughout our lives – why stop now? Here's how to take control:
1. Assess your current financial situation
2. Determine what you'll need in retirement
3. Think about what you want to do in retirement
4. Reverse engineer your ideal retirement lifestyle
Think about how you want to spend your time, how you want to relax, and how you can fulfil your passions during retirement. You’re still allowed to have a happy and fulfilling life in your later years, but it requires careful planning and action now.
There's a common misconception that we should stick to one job for 40 years and then retire. But that's not the reality for many of us, nor should it be. My own father never taught me this – he had multiple businesses and diversified his income throughout his life.
We’re in a unique position—many of us are Gen X or Boomers who have seen and adapted to monumental changes throughout our lives. We've invented, innovated, and endured, so why not apply that same resilience to our financial strategies?
There’s no rule that says you have to stick with the same job or the same retirement plan for decades. If it’s not working for you, change it. Align your finances with the life you want to live. You have a wealth of experience and wisdom to draw upon, so why not use it to your advantage?
You have the power to change and align your finances with the life you want to lead. It's time to break free from outdated notions of work and retirement.
Here are some steps you can take to secure a more fulfilling retirement:
1. Take a close look at your projected retirement income
2. Consider your potential future expenses, including healthcare and caregiving
3. Explore opportunities for additional income streams
4. Connect with others in similar situations for support and ideas
5. Stay open to new possibilities and ways of earning
Remember, you're allowed to have a fulfilling and happy life in retirement. It's not just about surviving; it's about thriving.

The Cost-of-Living Crisis and What you can do to Thrive
04 April 2022
It’s all over the news and social media, there is a rapidly developing cost of living crisis. For many there already was and has been for some time.
Let’s just make it clear; 100% of women will go through perimenopause and on into menopause. 99% of women going through ‘The Change’ will experience some symptoms that can affect daily life to some degree.
Like most of us I didn’t always have a flexible work regime and found myself working hours for a fixed income that didn’t quite meet the lifestyle I wanted to lead.
In fact, it was not all that long ago that I had to totally reassess what I was doing and where I wanted to be.
